Re: Greatest Bassist
I think a shout here too for Bernard Edwards especially for the bass on Chic's Good Times.

The most sampled bassline ever?

Can't see it myself. His one fingered playing was a carry over from his upright bass days. His index finger even developed its own nickname - 'the Hook'.

SurfaceAgentX2Zero 3:24 Mon Sep 24
Re: Greatest Bassist
I think he's using the usual 2 finger method there. Ilford (about 49 secs in), but with not much middle finger, for sure.

Re: Greatest Bassist
Just to take the piss, Jamerson played the bass with one finger. Check out this clip of him playing What's Going On with Marvin Gaye. Ridiculous.

As I mention a while ago. Mick Karn. A total genius and a unique style. Just see this clip where he's destroying the bass. Died too young.

Japan probably , because of their image, massively underrated bunch of musicans.

Sadly I've just had to strike one of my favourite Jamerson bass-lines off my list as it wasn't him!

Re: Greatest Bassist
Great shout on Jamerson.... magical bass lines on all those Soul classics.... if you ever get the chance watch a film/doc called Standing in the Shadows of Motown all about him and the Funk Brothers... it's brilliant stuff

I hadn't realised Babbitt was on 'Just My Imagination'.

He gets in the top ten just for that.

Re: Greatest Bassist
the coming of gary: Wilton felder played the bass on ‘I want you back’ arguably the best pop bass line ever.

I’d go with Larry Graham as the best ever: innovative but remembered that the bass is about holding things together not pyrotechnics.

Jaco Pastorius was technically the most talented: could play anything in any style, but i don’t particularly enjoy his music other than a bit of weather report now and then.

Has bob Babbitt been mentioned? He was fucking good, not least on inner city blues. Suffered from being second banana at Motown to Jamerson.

Being quite kind I would describe him as 'utilitarian'.

I remember reading somewhere that even 4 or 5 years in, Larry Mullen would still be giving him the nod when to come in when they played certain songs live.

Adam Clayton?!
He is terrible, absolutely no feel and can barely keep time.

With or Without You has a good bassline.

It’s because we are one big West Ham Community that have other interests besides football.
Some of us can disagree on football whilst agreeing on music or politics.

What is it that possesses someone to have these random thoughts - everyone has random thoughts - but then decide to put them on a West Ham website?

Fucking weirdo. I don't post West Ham questions on music websites as they would quite rightly be wiped off so why is this irrelevant shit allowed on here?

One day some sensible moderator (there must be one) will delete the Brexit thread and although less busy, the website will be so much better with all the cunts not bothering to look in any more.

Do you rate McVie? I’ve never heard anything positive from Bass players

Sure he's solid, but certainly no better than any decent amateur or semi-pro I've ever played with (many).

Re: Greatest Bassist
Bruce Foxton used to get slagged off by a few people (mainly because nobody thought he was a proper mod) but he was very good on occasion...
